1900 Edwardian to 1919
Romantic antique
and vintage gowns from the turn of the century ... for your décor,
collection or display! The Edwardian period began in January of 1901 when Queen Victoria died and King Edward VII took over the throne. In contrast to Queen Victoria’s somber fashions, the Edwardians enjoyed coming into lighter and more delicate fashions. Antique dresses in this category date to between 1900 (turn-of-the-century late Victorian) and 1920 and include Edwardian and Belle Epoque (in French, "beautiful time") styles such as the well-known Gibson Girl style. The soft, romantic styles of the 1900s with lavish lace are so very feminine and delightful! Here also are those styles worn post-1910 on the Titanic (1912) and, later in the 1910s, the Armistice fashions so popular during and after the Great War, World War I (WWI). Truly a period of fashion evolution, Edwardian clothing rejoiced with ruffles and lace and became practical with the beginning of the war years. These dresses are true antiques and should be handled with great care and respect. While many may be strong enough to be worn, we do not generally recommend doing so.
They make superb additions to your home's Victorian and Edwardian decoration when displayed out of direct sunlight. |
