If you love blue, you will simply fall in love with this beautiful Victorian dress from the 1890s! It will delight collectors, not only for its great design, but because it appears to be a work in progress. The skirt does not appear to have been altered, but the bodice seems to have been left partially altered, possibly for a style change as well as a size change. This dress will really be best used for study or for a pattern, though the fabric is in very good condition.
The skirt is fully lined w/blue polished cotton. Waistband is intact, with areas of light shredding. Slight bustle to the back and fastening with hook & eye. Hem is finished with 2 ruffles and weighed and protected by what appears to be a type of corduroy. The skirt has areas of wear, but no easily apparent holes. There is an area with powdery, chalky marks that seem to be able to be brushed away. Overall, the skirt is in good condition with reasonably strong fabric.
The bodice is extremely difficult to describe. It seems small in relation to the skirt but that may be due to being reworked. In fact, it may actually still be in the process of being remade into a different style. Giving the appearance of a vest and jacket, it is a one-piece bodice. The portion made to look like a jacket is edged with black and crystal seed beads, as are the edges of each cuff.
The center front looks to have been cut down for a V-neck style and closes with 8 handworked button holes. There are 5 pink square buttons that measure 3/8. I am certain they are not original to the garment. They do not fit the buttonholes well, which is why I have not photographed them all fastened. The beautiful embroidery on the front of the vest area is done in variegated shades of blue and is simply spectacular. I suspect it is machine embroidery but the lining is intact in this area and I cant see the back. There is a pleated cummerbund that fastens on the left side with hooks and eyes, but only one handworked eye remains visible. It seems to have been taken in at the side seams and this may be covering the other eye. There is evidence of at least 12 buttons on the original incarnation of this bodice (photo). Inside, the brown cotton lining has shredded. The lining buttons up the center front with 9 2-hole mother-of-pearl buttons, 3 of which are missing. Bodice is fully boned. There is extensive padding in the upper areas, which also leads me to believe this bodice was in the process of being made smaller.
The sleeves are exceptionally delightful! Lots of gathering and puffing! They are lined below the large puff with a muslin fabric.
All in all, on a dress form that would really fit this dress is absolutely gorgeous. The fabric is reasonably sturdy and will display marvelously.
Shown in some photos with a pale pink silk and lace jabot, which is NOT included.
Measurements are approximate, and this one was particularly difficult to measure with all the changes to it.
