Hairwork jewelry was extremely popular in the 19^th century.  Sometimes incorporated into mourning jewelry, but probably more often into simply “sentimental” jewelry human hair is considered to be a very personal memento.

This is an exceptional antique Victorian sentimental or mourning hair work brooch.  Made of tableworked human hair in two colors – blonde and brown.  There is a square knot shaped weave mounted upon a gold plated brooch finding, from which hangs a tiny chain that suspends a beautifully done cross in both the brown and blonde. 

Measures 1 7/8” wide and 2 3/8” long.  Original T-bar and C-clasp findings.
