A lovely example, circa 1897, of a scrumptious brown silk satin Victorian day dress. The chocolate brown color takes on an almost copper-y color in certain lighting.
The bodice attaches with 3 hooks and eyes at the center back to the skirt. It fastens at center front with a dozen hooks and eyes, 10 of which are quite unique (see photo). Two hooks are likely to be replacements. The lace at the neckline also appears to have a new snap added. The neckline is edged with a lovely lace which continues down the center front, with the addition of a ruffled grosgrain ribbon. The brown cotton lining is in tatters and all but two of the steel bones have been removed. The sleeves are fully lined, but the lining is shredding in the shoulder/upper arm area. The poufs at the shoulder are fully enclosed and the crinoline supports are still holding up well. The cuffs are decorated with tucks and are edged with the same lace as is on the neckline and center front. The lining could easily be removed without detracting from the outer garment.
The unlined skirt is neatly gathered at the back waist band to accommodate a small bustle pad and is accented at center front and back with two self-fabric covered buttons. The skirt fastens at center front, on the waistband, with two hooks and eyes (along with a snap, which appears to be a replacement) and 7 more vertically placed to hold the opening closed.
Condition issues are reflected in the price of this delightful Victorian dress. Other than the shredded lining of the bodice, the only other condition issue is scattered areas of dark spotting. The spots are extremely visible in the photos but not so much to the “naked eye”. None of the spots are very large and do not detract from the appearance of this very stylish dress. Very displayable!
