Antique Skirts from the World War I era are few and far
between, especially nice wearable ones like this great wool skirt.
This skirt, dating to the middle to late 1910s teens is
made of a sturdy black wool fabric.
A-line in style with gored panels, it has a decorative pleat at center
front, two patch pockets with flaps and decorative plastic (might be rubber)
buttons on the pockets and waistband.
The inner waist is reinforced with braid tape and there are two loops
for hanging the skirt. The waist is
slightly gathered at the back, but not really enough to accommodate a bustle of
any sort. The 2 1/8 waistband is
actually a separate piece, tacked on at three places in the back. The closure is at the left side front and
fastens with 3 snap fasteners and 2 hooks and eyes. The waistband fastens slightly more toward the center front, on
the left side with 3 snap fasteners.
All snaps, hooks, & eyes appear to be original. The hem is 5 ½ deep, so it could be
lengthened, although certainly there would be a crease but it doesnt appear to
have discolored the fabric.
The condition of this superb 1910s skirt is excellent. The only flaw is a broken button on one of
the patch pockets. There are some
slightly light areas on both pockets and one on the waistband. These are hardly visible and mentioned for
the sake of complete disclosure. A bit
of light cleaning might well remove them.
All in all, this early 1900s - Teens WWI era vintage skirt
is extremely sturdy and very wearable.
The skirt is a solid, very black wool. Photos have been lightened to show
detail. Skirt has been pinned at the
waist to fit my dress form.
