Most hoops, or cage crinolines, are aged white – ecru in color.  This antique cage crinoline is red – orange!  A single steel hoop is looped into 16 hoops which  are suspended from 5 cotton twill tapes.  The waist fastens in front with original buckle.

The smaller diameter of this cage crinoline indicates use in the later decades of the 19^th century.  Some believe that the crinolines of this size and style may have been used along with a small bustle.  Regardless, we find these wonderful antique crinolines to be very useful when displaying post 1875 Victorian dresses as they do help give proper shapes to the skirts – especially when used with a petticoat or two and, of course, a bustle when appropriate!

The condition is excellent – no broken or rusted hoops or tapes.  The covering on one of the upper hoops is missing in about a 2” section and the end of the waistband tape is frayed (shown in photo).
