In the days before air conditioning, ladies carried a fan as a fashionable and functional accessory. There are even published accounts of a secret “language of the fan” from the 19^th century and earlier! This fan dates to the early 20^th century and is made of imitation tortoiseshell and black ostrich feathers. The imitation tortoiseshell sticks are probably catalin. Measures 14 ½” wide when extended and is 9” high. Condition is exceptionally fine – excellent except for one ostrich feather which has broken off - only seen upon close inspection of the back. From the front, the feathers merely appear to be slightly thin because all the feathers are supple and full. The photos of the broken feather have been lightened in order to show it. Truely, this break hardly affects the appearance of the fan at all.
