Back in the 20s, women’s fashion dictated a long, flat body shape well known by flappers of the day – quite a difference between the S-bend corsets of just 10 years prior!
This 1920s piece of underclothing is called a bandeau. It is made of ecru colored cotton creating several differently patterned lace insertions having been sewn together to create the fabric.I see filet crochet and some type of bobbin lace, possibly torchon?
Features include a center back closure made of metal hooks and eyes riveted to a cotton twill tape. The straps are 7/8” wide ribbons, and there is a small piece of cotton twill tape at the bottom of the center front for use in attaching it to a corset.Darts are sewn in the front for contouring.
There are no labels.
Condition is FAIR.There is an area around the back closure where the lace has been stressed and broken. Here, there is quite a lot of repair attempted – obviously not by a lace maker!I have not attempted to clean it for this reason.
This bandeau would probably be strong enough for careful wear, but would most probably suit lace collectors or crafters who might wish to take apart the insertions.
The price reflects the condition.
