This is just a superb Edwardian black straw hat, dating to around the turn of the century. 

Fashioned of woven or braided straw bands over a millinery wire form and lined with black silk.  A wide velvet ribbon encircles the hat and forms a large, wired bow at the front.  A black silk veil decorated with chenille balls is attached at the back with a straight pin that is, in my opinion, definitely a mourning pin (dull black head and blued steel pin).  Of course, we have no way of knowing if this is original to the hat, but it is certainly old and of the period.

The condition of this toque style hat is excellent.  I can find no problems in the straw or ribbon.  The veil is fragile and it does have a few holes and small tears.  The silk lining is also excellent with only a harmless loose thread from the seam. 

Measurements are approximate, due to the nature of the style.  It was meant to sit somewhat on top of the hair.
