This antique spoon bonnet, circa 1863, is simply magnificent! Made of shimmery steel gray silk taffeta, this antique bonnet is in very good condition. The drawn silk is in nearly perfect condition. The curtain is stabilized with black cotton netting and the wire frame is covered in buckram, edged with straw braid, and lined in the taffeta and period muslin. The black lace inside the brim is just beautiful! The silk ribbon ties are edged in black. This, along with the black lace, may possibly signify a bonnet that was used in “second” or “complimentary” mourning. The only problems are shattering of the silk taffeta at the back, at the front edge, and on the ties, quite typical of bonnets of this age. There is a water-type stain on the inside (only) of the crown. Otherwise this is a very sound antique bonnet, perfect for display with your Victorian Civil War era gowns.
