#C0030 Black Silk Satin Victorian Bodice (Waist) with Fine Ecru Lace Panel

Here is a very nice, slightly larger size, antique Victorian waist or bodice circa 1900.

The black silk satin sports woven dots for a self-fabric pattern.  It is fully lined in silk and is boned.

The inner bodice, or lining, is a low square-necked cut, edged with scalloped black lace.  The lace is in good condition but is coming unsewn from the fabric on one side and has broken at the seam line on the other.  This does not affect the look or stability of the bodice as it is unseen once the front lace panel is in place.

The lining fastens up the front with 10 alternating period hooks and eyes.  There is an inner satin ribbon belt on the inside with 3 eyes at the center back to attach a skirt.  This belt is marked "A.M. Henderson Co., Lynn".

Once the lining is closed and fastened the ecru lace panel fastens up the left side and around the back of the collar.  These hooks and eyes appear to be replacements.  The lower portion of the lace panel is lined with ecru silk for modesty in the bust area, but the upper area and collar are left unlined.  The collar lace, lace panel, and liner are in excellent condition and we did not note any breakage and only a couple of very small areas of darkening (I can't even find one that I thought I saw earlier!).  The upper edge of the collar is edged with satin and a fine silk inner ruffle.  The collar shows the remnants of celluloid collar supports.  There is an ecru netted ruffle that runs along the front edges of the outer fabric, behind the more visible black net ruffle.  At the back of the neck, this netted ecru ruffle has torn but the visible black ruffle is in perfect condition.

The outer satin, which appears as an open jacket, now closes near the waistline with a triangular shaped piece decorated with 5 self-fabric covered buttons.  This part also attaches with hooks and eyes that look to have been replaced.  An outer belt fastens from the left side at the waistband that is decorated with 3 more self-fabric covered buttons.  At the shoulders, triangular pieces of fabric repeat the decoration.  The outer fabric is accented with tiny black embroidered french knots in the neck and shoulder area.  There are two 1" tears in the outer fabric just at the back of the neck and hard to see because of the black lining.

At the edges of the faux jacket opening are ecru and black net ruffles.  These ruffles follow the jacket opening, up around the back of the neckline. The black netting has held up well, but at the back of the neck, the ecru has shredded.  Black french knot embroidery also decorates the jacket edge opening and around the back of the neck.  Both the netting decoration and the embroidery are repeated at the sleeve cuffs, which remain in excellent condition.  The cuffs are accented with 3 self-fabric covered buttons, as well.  One is missing from the left sleeve.  There is about a 1" tear in the fabric and lining near the neckline toward the left shoulder and a tear in the shoulder on the right side.  The shoulder tear is unseen since the decorative treatment in that area hides it.

With the exception of a few flaws in the lace and a couple of tears to the fabric, this waist is in fine condition and a piece that you will be proud to own!
