This is a very neat vintage folding hand fan! It is larger than average in size and is made of paper on painted wooden sticks.
The end sticks are decorated with a floral design that almost looks like pyrography, but I don’t think it is. The bottoms of the other sticks are painted white with light purple, or lavender, tinting. A black/brown floral design that looks like it could be a stencil completes the stick decoration.
The paper is quite different in that it has an iridescent sheen that gives the appearance of mother-of-pearl. A rather abstract design is lightly painted on in a pearly gray and a little bit of light orange. Pearly gray paint dots are scattered liberally through the design and some darker purple paper dots are lightly added.
On the paper side of each of the outer sticks, a name is written in pencil. A man’s name – Hugh Smith, and a woman’s – Thelma Irene ___liam (Giliam?) which makes me think this may have been someone’s wedding fan.
The condition is very good. The paper is sturdy with minimal wear and paint loss. One of the outer sticks is broken but has a very well done period repair (seen in the second photo below) that more or less “ties” the outer stick to the second stick. It does not really compromise the function of the sticks and in all honesty, I hadn’t noticed it until I sat down to write this description!
Measures 19 ˝” wide and 10 ˝” long.
