Gaitan Mexican Hand Tooled Leather Vintage Handbag Purse Wallet Original Tag
Such an incredible find! This vintage 1960s Gaitan Mexican hand tooled leather handbag appear to have hardly ever been used and even comes with its original tag! It features a feather and floral design and comes with a ladies wallet in a matching design that also appears hardly used.
The purse has a very clean interior. The main body has 3 good sized pockets, the middle pocket has a heavy brass zipper closure. The front unzips with another heavy brass zipper and drops open to reveal a sewn patch pocket on each side.
The purse closes with a gold colored metal twist clasp, has 4 metal feet, and it has two carry handles – NO shoulder strap.
The matching ladies wallet is a single fold with a snap closure. Inside is a flap that has two plastic windows for your id and other cards. The front of the flap is stamped “Gaitan Mexico”. There is also a coin pocket with a snap closure. There is, of course, the thin pocket for your cash, but it also has a nifty zippered pocket behind that – for a little extra security! It still has a little yellow price sticker that reads “Gaitan PRONAF Juarez, Mexico” which helps us to date the handbag and wallet to the 1960s. (PRONAF stood for “Programa Nacional Fronterizo” [National Border Program] that was established in 1961 to reinvigorate Mexico’s northern border region.)
This is a large purse. It measures 12” wide, 8 ½” high (not including handles), and about 4 ¾” wide (measured across the bottom, where it is widest). The walled is 9” long (open) and 3 ¾” wide. Folded, it is about 1” high (with no contents).
Label: Gaitan Hencho en Mexico is sewn to the interior of the purse; also the above mentioned yellow price sticker in the wallet.
In very good +++ to excellent condition. The only issue I’ve found is a little bit of a water mark on the very upper portion of the front of the drop, above the metal base of the clasp. There are extremely minor marks from use on the flap, front and back. The photos showing this have been lightened a bit in order to make them visible for the sake of disclosure, but in reality, are hardly noticeable. There are some light areas in the interior on the drop front pocket. All issues are shown in the photos. There are a couple of marks on the front that look a bit like scratches, but after careful examination, it is a natural occurrence in the leather. It is unseen when the purse flap is closed, and is not even all that obvious at all. All zippers and snaps, and the clasp are in fine working order.
