Victorian Bodice Black Wool and Lace High Collar 1900s Large Size
This exceptional black Victorian bodice is sure to please collectors! Made of black wool gabardine with machine lace sleeves and collar in the pigeon breast, monobosom style of the early – mid 1900s, it is in amazing condition AND in a larger size than we usually see.
The bodice is demi lined with a gray twill fabric that covers the wool parts of the body and sleeve, as well as an interior waistband. The underarm pads are sewn in and show some light soiling. There is a center back closure with metal hooks and eyes holding the fabric and snaps on the lace portions. All hooks and eyes appear to be present. The celluloid stays that hold the high collar have all broken, but do not detract. The collar is edged with small, round baubles and a few are missing. The lace cuffs are also edged with matching baubles – all present on the right cuff and all missing on the left, meaning that if you so choose, there are probably enough baubles to be removed and reattached in a balanced manner. The wool sleeves have decorative fabric covered buttons and 1 is missing from the left sleeve. There are two small holes, about the size of a pencil tip eraser – one on the right elbow (noted with red arrow in one photo) and one just above the left cuff that refuses to show in photos. No breaks to the lace have been noted, but there might be a couple of minor ones. Some of the baubles along the front are also turning brown on the bottom.
While this wonderful bodice is strong enough to be wearable, it is also an excellent piece to study because it is not terribly fragile and the construction is easy to see. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE ARMSCYE MEASUREMENT – it is smaller than might be expected in a bodice with these larger measurements.
Condition is excellent, even with the minor noted flaws.
