The 1930s saw the deepest, darkest days of the Great Depression. With the 25% employment rate, people learned to “make do”. The crazy days of the Roaring Twenties were now gone and replaced with simpler dresses, many homemade from printed feedsacks. More conservative styles with waistlines, form fitting and with longer skirts were favored.
Even with less expendable income, people were able to escape to the movies. Glamorous Hollywood stars began dazzling us with sparkling costume jewelry and stylish gowns – open back evening gowns with bias cut skirts still make our eyes sparkle today!
